THE GREAT WAVE OF KANAGAWA

Hokusai's Great Wave, also known as "The Great Wave of Kanagawa", is a famous work of art by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai.

This iconic painting is an outstanding example of the ukiyo-e style, an art form popular in Japan during the Edo period.

Ukiyo-e is characterised by woodblock prints depicting scenes from everyday life, landscapes, kabuki actors and historical figures.

Hokusai's Great Wave shows a mighty wave cresting over small, vulnerable boats, with the majestic Mount Fuji in the background. It is a symbol of imposing nature and man's insignificance in the face of it. The work is renowned for its impressive depiction of movement and its lasting influence on Japanese art and culture.
