For the master himself, drawing was the basis of everything: he was convinced that, without knowing how to draw, it was nearly impossible to create something that made the difference. He said that “you can't think about any great artist without thinking about his ability to draw.” In nearly all these sketches or preparatory drawings, Botero reclaimed the importance of drawing in and for itself, and that drawing itself was an autonomous work.
